Sen Wyden Blocks Controversial PROTECT IP Act

Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) compares the Internet to the “shipping lane of the 21st century,” and says that we shouldn’t cede control of it to ” corporations through a private right of action, and to government agencies that do not sufficiently understand and value the Internet.” Once again Senator Ron Wyden has stepped up to block a controversial web filtering proposal, this time placing a hold on the Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act, or PROTECT IP Act. The hold prevents the full Senate from either debating or voting on the legislation. The moved followed the Act’s unanimous approval by the Senate Judiciary Committee. “ Consistent with Senate Standing Orders and my policy of publishing in the Congressional Record a statement whenever I place a hold on legislation, I am announcing my intention to object to any unanimous consent request to proceed to S. 968, the PROTECT IP Act,” he said in a statement. The PROTECT IP Act would give the Attorney General the power to force US based third-parties, including ISPs, payment processors, advertisers, and search engines to either block access to an infringing site or cease doing business with it. Copyright holders would be able to target payment processors and advertisers. It was Senator Wyden who placed a hold on simialr legisaltion late last year.
