Court Acquits BitTorrent User Citing Faulty Evidence
Last year LANVA reported the IP-addresses of 106 users of the country’s largest BitTorrent site to the police. The anti-piracy group claimed that the site’s users were sharing a copy of the Windows 7 Ultimate operating system and took action on behalf of Microsoft without notifying the software company. The self-proclaimed investigators evidence consisted of a screenshot of peers as listed by uTorrent.

Bill would’ve required ISPs to block content after a simple warning letter by copyright holders alleging copyright infringement as well for them to keep identifying data of those who receive it. The Chilean House of Reps has formally rejected the latest attempt Chilean President Michele Bachelet to “reform” that country’s copyright laws to include ISP-level content filtering. Pres Bacehelet had argued that it’s necessary in order to comply with a Free Trade Agreement with the United States , but critics pointed out that’s not true being that the US is nowhere near ever having a similar system in place nor is it likely to ever have one.

Three alleged members of the hacker gang Kryogeniks were hit with a federal conspiracy charge Thursday for a 2008 stunt that replaced Comcast’s homepage with a shout-out to other hackers. Prosecutors identified Christopher Allen Lewis, 19, and James Robert Black Jr., 20, as the hackers “EBK” and “Defiant,” known for hijacking Comcast’s domain name in May of last year — a prank that took down the cable giant’s homepage and webmail service for more than five hours, and allegedly cost the company over $128,000. Visitors to Comcast.net had been redirected to a simple page reading “KRYOGENIKS EBK and DEFIANT RoXed COMCAST sHouTz To VIRUS Warlock elul21 coll1er seven.” A third man, Michael Paul Lebel, 28, was also charged with helping the duo, though his alleged handle “Slacker” was not credited in the defacement message.

Back in August the UK government announced tough plans for dealing with online piracy. While the music and movie industries were notably supportive, opposition to the proposals were widespread. Those hoping that politicians might have had second thoughts are disappointed today.

In an attempt to make sure that Dutch citizens can’t access The Pirate Bay, BREIN took three of the tracker’s ‘founders’ to court. The anti-piracy outfit won the case and Fredrik, Gottfrid and Peter were ordered to block Dutch users, a decision they decided to appeal. This week the appeal was heard before the Amsterdam court.
