Google reportedly to part ways with China on April 10

April 10: General Robert E. Lee’s last address to Confederate troops, the Titanic’s departure from Southampton, England, my friend Jake’s birthday, and now, Google’s rumored pull-out date in China. The company is preparing to announce its decision as soon as March 22, according to an anonymous source speaking to the China Business News, though it likely won’t be the end of the company’s operations in the region.

Wikileaks Closes Operations Temporarily Due to Budget Woes

Wikileaks, the controversial whistleblower site, has temporarily shuttered its operations due to a dearth of funds to meet its operating costs. The site announced last December that it planned to temporarily cease operations, save for its anonymous submission tool, until it could raise money for its operating costs. But it has so far been unable to meet those needs.

New Technology Could Be Adopted to Monitor Illegal File Sharing in UK

Talks between Ofcom and Detica, a data gathering and processing company, could result in the adoption of a new system developed by the latter to help identify the illegal P2P traffic on broadband networks The UK’s concern with illegal file sharing has taken various forms. From Lord Mandelson’s plans to disconnect copyright infringers to the latest option that Ofcom (the independent regulator and competition authority for the communication industries in the UK) is considering – to use Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) technology developed by Detica and called CView to monitor file sharing (P2P) traffic on broadband ISP networks and asses the level of online piracy among customers. Sources say that rather than being used against individual users CView could have the role of measuring the level of illegal downloading on a network, data which is quite precious for copyright owners.

Dmitriy Guzner vs Scientology

Three days before his 20th birthday, Dmitriy Guzner was looking at up to two-and-half years in jail and amost $119,000 in fines after pleading guilty to “unauthorized impairment of a protected computer” —- —- a Cult of Scientology computer. “In January 2008, online hackers launched a massive attack on the Church of Scientology’s websites, forcing the church to hire computer security experts to reinstate its online presence,” says nj.com . In the end, only one Guzner, from Verona, New Jersey, “caught the attention of federal authorities after a YouTube video of a protest of the Church of Scientology in New York City identified one of the participants — the individual in the center — as ‘Aendy,’ which is also Guzner’s online handle,”says the story, going on: “According to the Anonymous website whyweprotest.net, the group was upset by the church’s attempts to suppress a leaked promotional video featuring actor and Scientologist Tom Cruise, who made enthusiastic claims about the religion.” “I think they were relying on a very simple premise, that the number of people arrested and convicted of these kinds of attacks is very low,” said Jose Nazario, manager of security research at Arbor Networks, which helps companies keep their websites secure.
