CRTC hearings, Day Two: ’strong words’

University of Ottawa student Frances Munn continues her coverage of the CRTC Network Management Hearings, as published on the Michael Geist blog . “Day two of the CRTC network management hearing featured some great presentations from the Open Internet Coalition, Zip.ca, CISP, and two knowledgeable individuals – Jean-Francois Mezei and Jason Roks,” says Geist, continuing »»» The presenters had some strong words about the lack of Canadian competition for high-speed Internet service, the debatable claims about the impact of P2P on congestion, and the overstated advertising claims. Unfortunately, it would appear once again that the Commission has accepted the ISP claims regarding congestion and network costs, leaving the panelists with the challenge of overcoming those basic assumptions That said, the day featured some startling revelations including Zip.ca’s Rob Hall stating that it is currently cheaper to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on postage to send DVDs via the mail, rather than distributing the same content electronically through the Internet given the bandwidth costs.

Tribler speeds up torrent search

The Tribler team recently published version 5.1 of it’s Bittorrent client with a much-improved search function. Tribler, which is developed by around two dozen scientists at the TU Delft, features P2P-based search to make web-based Bittorrent index sites and search engines obsolete. tribler 5.1 ui P2P-based search obviously has the advantage that it can’t be taken down, but Tribler competes on another field as well: It aims to be much faster than any web-based index.

White House: cybersecurity facing a Sputnik moment

The Obama administration has sent a number of signals that it takes the information infrastructure of the nation seriously, having approved stimulus money for broadband and established a post for a national CTO . In parallel with these actions, the administration authorized a review of the national cybersecurity policy, and that review is now complete. Depending on how you read the resulting report, it concluded either that we don’t have a cybersecurity policy, or that we have too many of them; in either case, its authors have made a number of very specific suggestions as to how to improve the situation.
