Francis Gurry, director-general of the UN’s World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), says the solution to illegal P2P piracy isn’t “putting teenagers in jail.” Francis Gurry, director-general of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a UN agency created in 1967 “to encourage creative activity, to promote the protection of intellectual property throughout the world,” gave a speech at the opening of India’s 5th International Forum on Creativity and Inventions in which he stressed that jailing convicted illegal file-sharers was not the solution to piracy. “I don’t believe we are going to win this, (to) find the solution by putting teenagers in jail,” said Gurry. “I think that is not going to win public sympathy.” “Part of the battle here is to sensitize the public to the fact that there is a real issue involved.

Research at Rotterdam’s Erasmus University found that boys whose mothers were exposed to PCBs and dioxins were more likely to play with dolls and tea sets and dress up in female clothes.

Developing countries are starting to realize they must be proactive in developing intellectual property enforcement regimes within the World Intellectual Property Organization or they risk being overpowered by major rights-holding counties like the US which are currently negotiating a separate Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) outside the WIPO system. “For the first time developing countries put forth the agenda,” said Ali Asad Gilani, first secretary of Pakistan’s delegation.

SAO PAULO, Brazil — A massive 2007 electrical blackout in Brazil has been newly blamed on computer hackers, but was actually the result of a utility company’s negligent maintenance of high voltage insulators on two transmission lines. That’s according to reports from government regulators and others who investigated the incident for more than a year. In a broadcast Sunday night, the CBS newsmagazine 60 Minutes cited unnamed sources in making the extraordinary claim that a two-day outage in the Atlantic state of Espirito Santo was triggered by hackers targeting a utility company’s control systems.
