National Data Breach Laws Move Through Senate

A national data breach law got closer to passage this week. The Senate Judiciary Committee approved two bills Thursday that address data security and breach notification, according to Government Information Security . The legislation was drafted in response to the plague of data thefts that have occurred over the last few years.

Payroll Site Hacked, Employment Numbers Swell

A payroll processing firm that was breached by hackers last month is warning customers about a new breach, after some clients noticed phantom employees popping up on their payrolls. New Jersey-based PayChoice sent a message to customers Thursday indicating that thieves appeared to have stolen customer login IDs and passwords by exploiting a vulnerability in the website feature for changing a password, WashingtonPost.com reports. PayChoice said it disabled the change password feature until it could fix the vulnerability.

Bank Sends Sensitive E-mail to Wrong Gmail Address, Sues Google

A Wyoming bank sent an e-mail containing sensitive customer data to the wrong Gmail account, and now wants Google to reveal the identity of the account holder who received the data. According to a court document in the case, in August a customer of the Rocky Mountain Bank asked a bank employee to send certain loan statements to a representative of the customer. The employee, however, inadvertently sent the e-mail to the wrong Gmail address.

Data Breach Exposes RAF Staff to Blackmail

Yet another breach of sensitive, unencrypted data is making news in the United Kingdom. This time the breach puts Royal Air Force staff at serious risk of being targeted for blackmail by foreign intelligence services or others. The breach involves audio recordings with high-ranking air force officers who were being interviewed in-depth for a security clearance.
