In another significant leap forward in the Federal Communications Commission’s campaign to get unlicensed broadband, or “white space” devices, into the market, the FCC says that it is now accepting proposals from companies that want to run the databases that will prevent these gadgets from interfering with other broadcast services. There’s money in this, in case you were wondering. “Database administrators may charge fees to register fixed TV band devices” and “to provide lists of available channels to TV band devices,” the Commission’s Public Notice notes.

p2pnet news view Politics | TV:- In the weeks leading to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission hearing on broadcasting licences, Canadians were inundated with splashy advertising campaigns claiming that new fees for local signals were either a TV tax or would save local television. With all of the major broadcasters and cable companies appearing before the commission, the fee-for-carriage (or value-for-signal) issue unsurprisingly took centre stage at last week’s hearing. Yet those convinced that the broadcaster plan was limited to a new fee were in for a rude awakening.
Continue reading »Judge Sides With RIAA in ‘Sham’ Litigation Class Action
A judge has dealt a major blow to a proposed class-action lawsuit alleging the Recording Industry Association of America’s nearly 6-year-old courthouse campaign against file sharers amounted to nothing more than “sham” litigation. The judge ruled that the RIAA has the right to bring civil lawsuits and is protected under a legal doctrine allowing special interests to form trade groups to protect their interests. The RIAA, the judge added, had an “objective basis” to bring lawsuits against individuals (.pdf) connected to IP addresses upon which file sharing is occurring.

The Far North Living Lab was started by the Northern Research Institute (Norut) and aims to create a platform for digital creativity. Earlier this year the lab kicked off with a spectacular experiment in which they used the Tribler BitTorrent client to stream a 2K resolution film onto the big screen. For that experiment the stream was only broadcasted to a select group of people and not the entire Internet.
