IsoHunt Stuck Behind China’s Great Firewall
China is no stranger to Internet censorship. The country’s Great Firewall includes many well known sites, but up until now BitTorrent sites have never been blocked. There was a short blocking incident two years ago when Mininova, isoHunt and The Pirate Bay were hijacked and redirected to the leading Chinese search engine, Baidu.

Google’s partners are getting a stern warning from Chinese authorities over Google’s decision to ditch censorship in the country, which some believe has already begun. An “industry expert” speaking anonymously to the New York Times said that a notice went out to Google’s biggest online partners on Friday, telling them to be prepared to continue censoring search results no matter what Google does. As we covered on Friday , Google is on the verge of either ending its censorship of search results or pulling its business out of China, although insiders say that Google is trying to work out an agreement with a handful of agencies so it doesn’t have to leave altogether.

The Chinese government is imposing new internet restrictions demanding personal-website operators to acquire central-government permission to operate their sites. The latest censorship measure, which covers .cn domestic domains, comes as Google is trying to convince Chinese censors to ease up. Google said 43 days ago it would undertake a self-imposed exile from China if the government does not back off from requiring it to censor search results.

Wikileaks, the controversial whistleblower site, has temporarily shuttered its operations due to a dearth of funds to meet its operating costs. The site announced last December that it planned to temporarily cease operations, save for its anonymous submission tool, until it could raise money for its operating costs. But it has so far been unable to meet those needs.
