Senate Panel to Examine Sale of Diebold Voting Machine Division
The Senate Rules and Administration Committee announced on Friday that it plans to examine the sale of Diebold’s voting machine division to a rival voting machine company, according to the Associated Press. Sen. Charles Schumer (D – New York) says putting the Diebold business into the hands of Election Systems and Software (ES&S) would give the latter a large majority of the voting machine market and put the integrity of elections at risk .

Senator Charles Schumer (D – New York) asked the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division on Monday to investigate the recent sale of Diebold voting machines to a competitor, saying the deal raises anti-competitiveness concerns and has “adverse implications on how our country votes.” Earlier this month, Diebold, Inc. announced the sale of its voting machine division , Premier Election Solutions, to top competitor Election Systems & Software for about $5 million. The sale gives ES&S, already the largest voting machine maker in the country, a near monopoly on the voting machine industry.

Diebold announced on Thursday that it has sold its voting machine division to Election Systems & Software (ES&S), a former competitor. Diebold’s unceremonious departure from the electronic voting machine business will be welcomed by critics of the company’s controversial direct-recording electronic voting products. Diebold, which is primarily an ATM maker, decided to unload its voting machine subsidiary–Premier Election Solutions–for roughly $5 million and change.
