Warner Shakes Hands with eMusic
The music service will add new artists to its online catalog A recent deal between the music downloading service eMusic and giant record label Warner will allow the former to include new artists in its online catalog. Following the agreement between the two companies 10,000 catalog albums will be made available for downloading, but no new popular hits will be added to the list. According to eMusic, the deal could lead to an increase of its customers who may reach 400,000 in number by the end of 2010.

The spread of file sharing lawsuits has reached the canton of Ticino where an 18-year-old woman was found guilty of making available online unauthorized content, setting thus a precedent. Currently, the Swiss law allows the downloading of material but forbids the illegal sharing of such material over the Internet. The Locarno based young woman received a suspended fine for illegally making available 270 movies and 4,200 tracks.

After the news broke that The Pirate Bay owners would sell the site to Global Gaming Factory, an independent tracker OpenBitTorrent (OBT) was launched. Due to its public nature, OBT was seen by some as a possible replacement for The Pirate Bay tracker. Even though the sale never went through, OpenBitTorrent has proved its worth recently, since the Pirate Bay tracker had been struggling to stay online.

Had initially told students it would turn over the names of people accused of illegal downloading to copyright holders, but realizes it’s not obligated to do so under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and says it will simply warn them instead. Brooklyn Law School seems to be in need of some remedial education concerning copyright law and its obligations as spelled out in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. For students there were recently greeted to this e-mail from Phil Allred, the school’s CIO.
