Behavioral efforts, not money, will drive energy efficiency

When it comes to reducing carbon emissions, most of the attention has focused on new technologies like renewable power and electric vehicles, as well as their associated costs. But study after study shows that we can save both energy and a significant amount of cash through the use of energy efficiency technology that’s already on the market. A Policy Forum in today’s issue of Science suggests that the bottleneck isn’t so much technological or economic as it is behavioral, and argues that the US needs to start performing tests of behavior-oriented programs.

Pirate Bay co-founder Peter Sunde wants your credit card number

For years, the Pirate Bay was the place to go to if you wanted to share movies, music or other digital goods. Pirate Bay co-founder Peter Sunde, who resigned from his job as the site’s spokesperson earlier this year, now has his eyes set on a different kind of loot: Sunde is one of the founders of the Swedish start-up Kvittar that promises to keep track of all of your purchases and offer a kind of online locker for receipts. The Pirate Bay goes magnetic

The Pirate Bay — or the latest rev after unsuccessful entertainment industry efforts to close it down — has changed it ways. It’s decided trackers are passé and that “magnet links”are where’s at. Magnets, invented by Gordon Mohr , allow websites to link to content on p2p networks, p2pnet posted in 2004, going on: “If you’ve installed a p2p app that works with Magnets , clicking a link will trigger a download within the application and it’ll start automatically.” uTorrent and Vuze are examples.

Pirate Party Gets Second Seat in European Parliament

With more than 7 percent of the vote, the Swedish Pirate Party secured a seat in the European Parliament in June, and the possibility of gaining another if the Lisbon Treaty was signed by all member states. The Lisbon Treaty was ratified yesterday by Vaclav Klaus, President of the Czech Republic, who was the last to sign the document. Ironically, The Pirate Party was against the Lisbon Treaty, which has now doubled the number of seats the party has in the European Parliament.
