At the Internet Governance Forum meeting here in Egypt, a session on critical Internet resources started with yet another discussion of the transition from IPv4 to IPv6. This time, talk turned to paying for the upgrade to IPv6—a real issue in poorer countries. Rod Beckstrom, the head of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Number (ICANN), offered his own novel approach to the problem: a worldwide “cash for clunkers” program targeted at old networks.

So concluded 200 representatives from business, governments, parliaments and civil society in Geneva, on September 14 and 15, at the 2nd European Dialogue on Internet Governance. “There was consensus among participants on the importance of maintaining a multistakeholder approach to Internet governance related issues following the UN Internet Governance Forum model and the Tunis Agenda (the conclusions of the World Summit on the Information Society), and that EuroDIG is the ‘European IGF’, where a common European perspective should be discussed and carried to other fora,” says EuroDig in a statement.
