3-D Films Safe from Pirates. For How Long?
Beyond their magnetism towards audience, the highly impressive special effects of James Cameron's 3-D epic “Avatar”, are giving movie studios hope for a different type of special effect – an anti-piracy one. Michael Peyser, a University of Southern California (USC) professor of production and executive producer of 2007's “U2 3D”, thinks 3-D films will enjoy a peaceful and fruitful period, away from the danger of being pirated since “there's no commodity to it, nor can the files, even if they're copied, be viewed.” Avatar: The Movie that Has Changed the Face of Movies Camcorders(allegedly accountable for up to 90 % of pirated new releases) are rather useless when it comes to illegaly recording 3-D films in the theatres because the images on such films consist of two projections of differently polarized light. Polarization lines up light waves so that they all vibrate at the same angle – “If you record a 3-D image with a handheld [camcorder], then you're just going to end up with a blurry image,” pointed out Rick Heineman, a spokesman for 3-D technology company RealD, according to msnbc.com.

Sorry for the absence guys but now we’re back with our weekly movie review – some good films have appeared lately on p2p networks and ‘The Invention of Lying’ is definitely one of them. Co-written and directed by Ricky Gervais (his first film as a director) and newcomer Matthew Robinson, the film exposes a world where lying is totally unknown to mankind until Mark Bellison discovers it (“I said something that wasn't”) and while there are moments where the glimpses into this world are a bit disappointing and not as spectacular as we’d expect, ‘The Invention of Lying’ manages to create the right context for deep thoughts and reflection. Maybe the first 30 minutes of the film are its best but nonetheless it keeps a good pace and delivers good (sometimes bitter) comic scenes until the end.

At a very young age – 30 years old, Jamie Cullum has become a very acclaimed name in contemporary jazz music who already has released five studio albums. The latest one, entitled “Pursuit”, came out at the beginning of November and according to some estimations the artist lost around 60,000 sales of the album because of illegal file sharing. That hasn’t made Cullum change his attitude towards file sharing which is seen as something natural with both upsides and downsides.

Korean Film Producers Association plans a new crackdown against p2p file sharing using a digital filtering system that it wants all p2p sites to implement or else face “severe measures”. Now doubt about it, after gaining a bad rep for being the first country to enforce the “three strikes” model for repeat copyright infringers, South Korea is determined to maintain it as a press release reveals: “From now on, the failure to install the software will be taken as an offense against consumers and copyright holders. We will seek stern legal measures.” A network of 78 Korean P2P sites, accounting for about 90% of the local online movie downloading sources, have already complied with the request to install the software which identifies copyrighted works on the Web using an audio encoding system.
