isoHunt and Why It’s So Successful

Ranked 199 by Alexa, isoHunt is a most prolific p2p file sharing site which managed in 6 years of existence to gain extreme popularity, gather millions of users, but also dodge lawsuits from copyright holders. The founder of the popular BitTorrent search engine, Gary Fung, has been interviewed recently by Computerworld in light of rumors about him hoping for a collaboration with the movie and the music industries. In the Q&A interview Fung also revealed some details about how he succeeded in keeping the site on the surface despite legal matters and his plans for his new ‘baby’ – another p2p site.

Congress ethics inquiry probe leaked online

p2pnet news view P2P | Politics:- A report saying the activities of more than 30 lawmakers and several aides are being investigated about concerns including defense lobbying and corporate influence peddling has been leaked online. It, “appears to have been inadvertently placed on a publicly accessible computer network, and it was provided to The Washington Post by a source not connected to the congressional investigations,” says the newspaper. “The committee said Thursday night that the document was released by a low-level staffer.” The 22-page Committee on Standards Weekly Summary Report, “gives brief summaries of ethics panel investigations of the conduct of 19 lawmakers and a few staff members,” says the story, going on the committee’s review of investigations, “became available on file-sharing networks because of a junior staff member’s use of the software while working from home … ” The staffer was fired, says the story.

Microsoft trying to patent studying evolution

Given the existence of prior art, patent applications that lay claim to widely used methods should be shot down during their application process, but that hasn’t stopped even big companies from trying, or the Patent Office for granting them. Microsoft’s seen both sides of this problem recently, as it was granted one patent for storing formatting information in XML files, and faced a damaging injunction for violating someone else’s patent on the same general thing. In a bit of awkward timing, it was recently discovered that, two years ago, Microsoft filed a patent for clustering phylogenetics methods , which have existed for years, and are currently in use by just about anyone who does evolutionary biology.

Amazon: Discovery is infringing on our patents, too!

Two months after being sued by Discovery Communications for patent infringement related to its Kindle e-book reader, Amazon has fired back with a handful of patent infringement counterclaims of its own. The online retail giant accuses the cable network responsible for the likes of Mythbusters and The Deadliest Catch of infringing on its patents covering various aspects of e-commerce. In a filing on May 15, first reported by TechFlash , Amazon denies infringing on any of Discovery Communications’ patents, arguing that they should be invalidated due to the existence of prior art.
