A district court in Stockholm has ordered the founders of popular BitTorrent tracker The Pirate Bay to shut down their website or face a fine. Pirate Bay admins Godfrey Svartholm Warg and Fredrik Neij could both be on the hook for 500,000 kroner—which translates to $71,500—if the site remains operational. The court order might not have much impact, however, because the pirate duo has left the country and claim that they are no longer involved in managing The Pirate Bay.

Gottfried Svartholm-Warg and Fredrik Neij told they must shut down the site or pay a 500,000 Swedish kronor ($71,297 USD) fine, nevermind the fact that neither they nor site are located in Sweden. The Stockholm District Court took Swedish BitTorrent tracker The Pirate Bay’s fight against its conviction for copyright infringement to the next level yesterday after it ordered that two of the defendants, Gottfried Svartholm-Warg and Fredrik Neij, close the site or pay a fine of 500,000 Swedish kronor ($71,297 USD). Apparently unimportant is the fact that the site is registered in the Seychelles islands and that both live outside Sweden.
Continue reading »Pirate Bay Appeal Postponed Till Summer 2010
On April 17th, Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm, Peter Sunde and Carl Lundstrom were found guilty of ‘assisting in making copyright content available.’ The Court sentenced the defendants to one year in prison and a fine of $905,000 each. While awaiting the appeal that was announced immediately after the verdict, The Pirate Bay continued to operate as if nothing had happened. In the background, however, both the defense and prosecution teams were preparing for the appeal which was scheduled to take place next month.
