HBO Making RIAA “Self-Destruction” Film
Adaptation of the book “Appetite for Self-Destruction: The Spectacular Crash of the Record Industry in the Digital Age” by music journalist Steve Knopper will chronicle the rise and fall of the US music industry. Many are well aware of the music industry’s long history of ignoring music fans and now it seems that HBO Films has decided to produce a movie that chronicles its shortcomings. According to the Hollywood Reporter it will be based on the book “Appetite for Self-Destruction: The Spectacular Crash of the Record Industry in the Digital Age” by music journalist Steve Knopper.
Continue reading »Spanish Copyright Industry Abandons “Three-Strikes”
Will focus on BitTorrent tracker sites instead. The Spanish Coalition of Creators and Content Industries , comprised of copyright holders from the music, film, and software industries, has decided to abandon plans for a “three-strikes” system to disconnect illegal file-sharers from the Internet after govt indications that it’ll refuse to enact legislation permitting them to do so. CCCI will instead target BitTorrent tracker sites “within a short space of time.” It claims the number of them has ballooned from 70 to 200 in a just a few months, and is still in the process of compiling evidence of the sites’ activities.

The outcome of the study is not really that much of a surprise, since nearly half of all Internet users download copyrighted music without permission, so we have to agree with the overall conclusion. However, we do have problems with the authors’ following argument that unsigned and new bands don’t really profit from sharing their music online. By sheer volume the number of downloads these lesser known bands accumulate might only be a fraction of those generated by the Britney Spears and Duffys of this world, but 10,000 downloads is pretty significant for developing artists.

Ever since the whiter-than-white judge threw the book at The Pirate Bay Four in their recent trial, many in the music industry have been most vocal and, it has to be said, most jubilant at the news of this historic victory. There haven’t been that many words of support for The Pirate Bay from the music world, so it’s interesting to read some comments today printed in Scotland’s Big Issue . The court in The Pirate Bay case decided that for assisting others to commit copyright infringement, the four defendants would receive fines of around $905,000 each plus one year in jail.
