“Since I started The Underground Restaurant in London nine months ago, pop-up or home restaurants have increased in popularity up and down the country,” wrote Ms Marmite Lover in a Guardian article in October. “My initial idea was simple: provide well-cooked food in intimate surroundings at a reasonable price, with an element of punk rebellion and a do it yourself attitude which sprung from my background in a political samba band and cooking at anti-G8 camps. I wanted to stick it to the Man.” Now, it seems, the Man has stuck it to both her and her not-for-profit events.

The Senate Commerce Committee on Thursday opened an investigation into so-called “mystery charges” that appear on consumers’ credit cards. The charges, up to $12 monthly, stem from what the committee labeled “deceptive” e-commerce marketing practices connected to pop-up adds on popular sites like Fandango.com and Orbitz.com. Thousands of consumers have complained, the committee said.

Walgreens is ordering the removal of the “Chia Obama” from its stores in Tampa and Chicago, saying the ceramic-plant figure of the chief executive is inappropriate for sale. Spokesman Robert Elfinger said store managers have the ability to market products of their choice. But the top brass of the Deerfield, Illinois-based drug chain was not amused by some of its Tampa and Chicago managers’ choices to market the President Obama likeness.
