Microsoft Toughens Windows 7 Protection Against Piracy

Microsoft recently announced that its development team is currently working on an update for Windows 7, aimed at fixing a series of flaws that counterfeiters could exploit to override the anti-piracy measures integrated in the operating system, CNet reports. According to Joe Williams, general manager of Microsoft's Genuine Windows unit, in charge with the implementation of anti-counterfeiting solutions, The Windows Activation Technologies Update for Windows 7, which will be released in the coming week, will successfully close well over 70 forged activation codes. The update will establish connection with a server on a regular basis to verify if there are further hacks that need to be dealt with, while not disclosing any personal information about the user.

Judge Slams MPAA ‘Cartel’ Allegations

A federal judge is slamming the door on RealNetworks’ argument the Hollywood studios are a “price-fixing cartel” that illegally prevent the distribution of DVD-duplicating wares. The Seattle-based electronics concern made the anti-trust argument in a failed bid to convince U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel in San Francisco to lift a distribution ban (.pdf) of its RealDVD software.

Body Scanners Might Violate U.K. Child Protection Laws

The deployment of body scanning x-ray machines could violate child protection laws in the United Kingdom and prevent their implementation, according to the Guardian . British officials were forced to exempt the scanning of anyone under 18 during a year-long test of the machines at Manchester airport until legal questions could be worked out, the newspaper said. There are also concerns that images of nude celebrities could be posted online or sold to tabloids.

Industry Minister Tony Clement’s anti-spam bill has steadily made its way through the legislative process, with the Standing Committee on Industry likely to conduct its final “clause by clause” review over the next two weeks. Although support for anti-spam legislation would seemingly be uncontroversial, various business groups have mounted a spirited attack against the bill, claiming requirements to obtain to user consent before sending commercial email will create new barriers to doing business online.
