US Military BitTorrent Users Targeted By MPAA/RIAA
Campaigns about copyright infringement, particularly those relating to online file-sharing mechanisms such as BitTorrent, are nothing new. They have, however, escalated in recent years and now regularly appear in the mainstream press, even penetrating our schools. An insider at a US base in Japan has been in touch with TorrentFreak to tell us of a new initiative underway which is being operated by the Department of Defense.

TIGA, a company that represents and serves the interests of games developers and associated businesses in UK, has recently published a study according to which an important percent of its members regard piracy rather as a problem than an imminent danger to hovering over their revenue. Gamasutra posted some edificatory figures: “60 percent of developers said piracy is a problem; of these, 90 percent believe the problem is “constant or increasing,” according to TIGA. But of those surveyed, only 10 percent said the threat level was “high,” while 20 percent called it “medium” and 60 percent believe it is “low.” (10 percent had no opinion).” When it came to how illegal file sharing should be dealt with in light of the latest anti-piracy measures taken by the UK government, 50 percent of the developers opposed the “three strikes” policy of disconnecting copyright infringers.

Every time there’s a major data breach in retail or government, there’s a chorus of frustrated customers trying to find out whether their information was exposed to would-be identity thieves. The problem is that it’s near impossible to find out this information unless the organization in question takes the initiative to notify customers with exposed data. This, quite frankly, happens very slowly.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced a new program at the State Department, the Global Partnership Initiative, earlier this year. The initiative seeks to increase partnerships between the public and private sectors to help solve a number of pressing global issues. One of the first fruits of the Global Partnership Initiative was a series of TED Talks, dubbed TED@State, held yesterday afternoon at the State Department’s Dean Acheson Auditorium.
