The operator of a popular BitTorrent search site said Monday he likely will challenge last week’s landmark decision by a U.S. judge declaring such sites unlawful, and no different from conventional peer-to-peer piracy services. “We do think from our preliminary review there are a number of issues for appeal,” said Ira Rothken, the attorney for popular torrent search engine ISO Hunt , the defendant in the case.

Lately there has been a rather unfortunate p2p climate as headlines concerning some of the most popular torrent sites have revealed bad news all starting, of course, from legal matters. isoHunt’s founder, Gary Fung, wants to change that as he seeks for a favorable decision in court but what chances does he really have? After The Pirate Bay announced earlier this month the shutting down of its torrent tracker (but denied any connection between the decision and the legal pressure that was put onto two of the site’s founders), yesterday we reported how Mininova has finally capitulated to the entertainment industry’s joy and complied with the court’s ruling given this summer which had asked it to remove all the links to copyright protected material.

During September 2008, isoHunt founder Gary Fung grew tired of the threats from the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA). Instead of waiting for the CRIA to take action against him, Fung took the unusual step of suing the music industry outfit, seeking confirmation that the site’s operations are legal. “This is our preemptive strike with a narrowly defined petition for Declaratory Relief that we do not infringe, in anticipation they are going to file their own lawsuit that we do infringe (their copyright),” Fung told TorrentFreak at the time.

Networkworld has an interesting , albeit a little ill-formatted interview with Isohunt.com founder Garry Fung, who offers a few interesting details about his site. Isohunt is currently getting around 30 million visitors per month, according to Fung, and its MySQL index is a whopping 30 GB. That’s a lot of torrent data right there.
