Speaking of near-religious experiences , “GodBlock is a web filter that blocks religious content”, promises, well, GodBlock . Why, for God’s sake, would anyone want to filter religious content? (Shakes head in puzzlement.) GodBlock is “targeted at parents and schools who wish to protect their kids from the often violent, sexual, and psychologically harmful material in many holy texts, and from being indoctrinated into any religion before they are of the age to make such decisions”, it declares, going on > > > When installed properly, GodBlock will test each page that your child visits before it is loaded, looking for passages from holy texts, names of religious figures, and other signs of religious propaganda.

Yet feral corporations are increasingly not only allowed but actively encouraged to penetrate school systems, preaching phony ’standards’ desiged to corrupt kids into good little ‘consumers’ at the earliest possible age. With the $675,000 judgment against Joel Tenenbaum now final, the inevitable finger pointing has begun. Tenenbaum was only the second person in the nation to be sued by the RIAA for file sharing and to take the case all the way to jury trial, making it a closely watched case. It’s not surprising he lost, given that he admitted to sharing 30 songs on Kazaa and Limewire. But a few commentators have decided that Tenenbaum’s lawyer, Harvard’s Charles Nesson, is to blame for failing to offer the nuanced “ fair use ” defense invited by the judge.

Put forward on behalf of Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony Music, and Time-Warner, Fox, Disney, Columbia, Paramount and MGM, by Lord Peter Mandelson, it would turn governments around the world into corporate enforcement agencies , and local ISPs into copyright cops. Their targets would be anyone and everyone alleged to have improperly shared files online.

If your mother was like my mother, she probably spent your childhood telling you things like, “If all the other kids jumped off a cliff, would you follow?” In other words, just because something becomes popular doesn’t make it a good idea. Apparently, Canada’s Access Copyright collective is staffed by Canuck versions of my mother, because the arguments are the same: format shifting and time shifting might be popular with the kids everyone who owns an iPod or a DVR, but that doesn’t mean they should be legal. Not without payment, anyway.

Britain’s Carphone Warehouse has joined the ranks of companies and contracted performers determined to help the entertainment cartels gain control of the Internet as their exclusive product distribution system The operator of the TalkTalk broadband network, Carphone Warehouse is touting a plan which would have parents acting as corporate copyright control cops. Under it, parents would censor their kids’ online activities with a U, 14 or 18 certificate, or unclassified rating system Parents “choosing” the U or 14 options, “would be able to block computers in the household from accessing certain filesharing sites such as the Pirate Bay, as well as pornography and gambling, without having to install extra software on the computer,” the Financial Times has Carphone Warehouse boss Charles Dunstone stating. The move would, “help consumers understand a system that blacklists sites that facilitate piracy,” says the story, also quoting Dunstone as declaring: “This is something that we are going to do anyway, as a service to our customers.

UK Youth Survey: Paying for Music is a Luxury

Percentage of illegal file-sharers aged 14-24yo remains largely unchanged at 61%, with many saying they just can’t afford the high price of physical and digital albums. UK Music , an umbrella organization that claims to represent the collective interests of the UK’s commercial music industry, has released the results of a survey it commissioned and carried out by the University of Hertfordshire’s Music and Entertainment Industries Research Group. It surveyed some 1808 14-24yos across the UK in what it claims to be the “UK’s largest ever academic research into the music experience and behavior of young people” in that age group.
