Feds Can Search, Seize P2P Files Without Warrant

The authorities do not need court warrants to view and download files trading on peer-to-peer networks, a federal appeals court says. Wednesday’s 3-0 ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals concerned a Nevada man convicted of possessing child pornography as part of an FBI investigation.

Transmission Bitorrent client now supports magnet links

The folks behind the cross-platform, open source Bittorrent client Transmission have just released version 1.80 of their application. The release features a few dozen bug fixes as well as 44 enhancements based on user requests, and one of the most notable new features is that Transmission now supports magnet links. Magnet links are basically URLs for files that are distributed via P2P.

$675,000 RIAA File Sharing Verdict is ‘Unreasonable’

The nation’s second file sharing defendant to challenge the Recording Industry Association of America at trial is asking the court for a retrial, or to reduce the $675,000 verdict the jury levied for infringing 30 songs. Among other claims, lawyers for defendant Joel Tenenbaum asserted Monday this summer’s verdict was unconstitutionally excessive – an argument, in essence, that a penalty of $22,500 a song is simply too big, shocks the conscience and is “obviously unreasonable.” But that argument is a long-shot at best. A similar one is pending in the Jammie Thomas-Rasset litigation — the nation’s first file sharing case where a Minnesota jury dinged her $1.92 million for 24 songs this summer.

According to a LimeWire press release , the company has made some changes in their team hiring two new important names – John Pavley as Vice President of Engineering and Shoshana Winter as Vice President of Marketing. Pavley surely has an impressive professional background – Before joining Limewire, he worked for Conductor, Inc., as Chief Technology Officer, an before that he was Chief Technology Officer of ContextWeb, a company that offers real-time contextual advertising solutions to capitalize on online advertising results. For a period of time Pavley also tried his skills at Yahoo! Search Marketing as VP Business Systems Engineering.

Kidz Bop drops lawsuit against Limewire

Music label Razor & Tie Entertainment , knwon for its Kidz Bop compilations, has dropped its lawsuit against Limewire, according to a story from Billboard.biz . Razor & Tie had sued Limewire about a year ago , at the time calling the file sharing software “a breeding ground for copyright infringement of unprecedented magnitude.” What led to the change of mind? Limewire and Razor & Tie wouldn’t tell Billboard any details about the new withdrawal of the lawsuit, but Limewire CEO George Searle told the music industry publication that he views conflicts like this one not as legal issues, but business issues.
