GoalBit: P2P Streaming Goes Open Source

Bandwidth-conscious broadcasters have a new way to distribute their live video streams. A group of Uruguay-based P2P researchers recently released the first English-language version of their open-source P2P streaming application, GoalBit. The application, which is based on a BitTorrent-like architecture, aims to compete with P2P streaming services like PPLive and PPStream by giving anyone looking to distribute their own live video programming a way to do so.

Aussie Minister: “I Never Wanted to Filter P2P”

Broadband Minister Stephen Conroy responds to criticisms that the proposed “mandatory voluntary” Internet filter would try to block BitTorrent and other P2P programs, though is a complete reversal from earlier statements. Opposition to Australian Broadband Minister Stephen Conroy’s plan for a “ mandatory voluntary ” scheme of filtering the Internet to “ protect the children ” is taking another beating these days with criticism from the Green Party over his refusal to release data on what proportion of illegal net traffic the government’s filter would actually block. In Senate Question Time last week, Greens Communications Spokesperson Senator Scott Ludlam asked Minister Conroy to what degree his plan would filter BitTorrent and P2P traffic.

Musician: “P2P Important for Learning Different Genres”

Says that artists who don’t take advantage of technology to hear and learn as much music as possible are at a “severe disadvantage” to those that do, and that “resisting file-sharing hasn’t helped anything.” Musicianwages is a website dedicated to helping those who want to make a living as a musician. The site is about the musician business, not the music business, and so it has a interesting point to make in the whole P2P debate. A mother with a teenage son aspiring to be a musician himself recently asked David J.Hahn, co-founder of the site and freelance pianist in New York City, if file-sharing of his work bothers him or is he “just glad to have it being enjoyed.” “He tells me the record sales make money for the record label, not the artist,” she writes .
