Transmission Bitorrent client now supports magnet links

The folks behind the cross-platform, open source Bittorrent client Transmission have just released version 1.80 of their application. The release features a few dozen bug fixes as well as 44 enhancements based on user requests, and one of the most notable new features is that Transmission now supports magnet links. Magnet links are basically URLs for files that are distributed via P2P.

BitTorrent’s Future? DHT, PEX and Magnet Links Explained

The Pirate Bay’s recent confirmation that they had closed down their tracker since DHT and Peer Exchange have matured enough to take over, was coupled with the news that they had added Magnet links to the site. This news has achieved its aim of stimulating discussion, but has also revealed that there is much confusion over how these technologies work. The key thing to understand is that nobody is being forced to use Magnet links or trackerless torrents.

Pirate Bay Drops Trackers, Converts to “Magnet Links”

Swedish BitTorrent site tracker site further decentralizes content distribution, and in fact decides not to run a tracker anymore. Swedish BitTorrent tracker site The Pirate Bay has taken content distribution to the next level with the introduction of site-wide magnet links that let you download a torrent directly into your BitTorrent client, instead of your browser. The main purpose of magnet links is to give people an alternative way of getting the torrent file should websites hosting torrents like The Pirate Bay go down, and already supported by most BitTorrent clients like uTorrent and Vuze, which get all relevant data via the Distributed Hash Table (DHT) network.
