Mass litigation has commenced against 2,000 individuals accused of copyright infringement by Gallant Macmillan on behalf of record label Ministry of Sound. Ministry of Sound’s Lawyers vs. Illegal Downloaders

UK legal firm Gallant Macmillan has been pretty busy lately sending warning letters to file sharers suspected of having downloaded the latest Ministry of Sound dance music compilation, consumer group BeingThreatened reports. “Unlawful file-sharing is a serious problem for Ministry of Sound, reducing income for the musicians and composers it works with and diminishing the funds needed to invest in new talent,” the letter points out. As any P2PON reader would guess, the letters were meant to be threatening and convincing – they threatened with lawsuit and tried to convince recipients an out-of-court settlement would be a more convenient choice for them (in this case “the convenience” was priced at £375, paid within three weeks).

BitTorrent Admins Charged in $1.25bn Movie Piracy Case

Claiming that the site was a major source of pre-release cammed movies with links to piracy groups outside the country, on May 26th 2009 the Russian Federation Ministry of Internal Affairs Investigation Committee under the Ministry of Internal Affairs carried out a raid on the the Russian BitTorrent tracker, Interfilm.ru. The action followed complaints from anti-piracy group RAPO, a founding member of the MPA which represents the interests of Universal, Paramount, Sony, Warner Bros and 20th Century Fox in Russia. At Interfilm’s Moscow base the police arrested several staff and also the main targets, husband and wife team Ivan and Irina Podorozhnikovymi.

Following complaints from a book association, various publishers and translators, the Bulgarian government has dismantled a popular literary resource in Bulgaria. Chitanka.info was an online library that indexed both local and translated user-scanned and edited books, poetry and other literature. In addition to official titles, many works were uploaded by their creators.

Hacktivists Protest Proposed Shutdown of P2P Sites

Spanish courts have ruled repeatedly that operating a file-sharing oriented website without profiting directly from infringements falls within the boundaries of the law. In an attempt to change this, the Spanish Government has recently proposed new legislation under which sites offering links to copyright works could be taken offline without a judicial order. It comes as no surprise that the announcement has been met with firm opposition from activists and hacktivists, who quickly organized several protests.

An illegal “rehabilitation camp” for ‘net addicts’ was closed and 13 workers, including its president, were arrested after a 15-year-old Deng Senshan (right) died, said p2pnet in August, quoting China Daily . “In photographs shown to China Daily, Deng’s body is pictured with bruises and his face is covered in blood,” says the story. Now a “front-line advocate of treating Internet addiction” says “net addicts” should be taken to “qualified health institutions rather than rehab camps,” says China state news agency Xinhua .

Spain Gets Tough on Piracy, 200 File-Sharing Sites Targeted

Spain has declared war on piracy – first, little more than a week ago, the government announced a new inter-ministerial commission was founded with the purpose of creating a legislation that would help in the battle against violations against intellectual property. Now, 200 Spanish sites that provide links to illegal downloads have been ‘handed over’ to the Spanish industry ministry, Coalition of Creators and Content Industries and the CoPeerRight Agency has announced recently at the presentation of a report called Parasites' Business. “Spain is the only country in the world with no legal, civil or administrative measures in place to combat this problem”, pointed out Coalition president Aldo Olcese.

The Chinese government has never really been a fan of video games, and the Chinese Ministry of Culture is now tightening its control of what kinds of games can be accessed via the Internet. The Ministry issued a notice on Monday saying that certain types of games posed a “serious threat to the moral standards of society” and that they would be blocked as of this week. The games in question would be those that “promote the glorification of mafia life.” What, exactly, does that include?

World of Warcraft China re-launch

WoW, World of Warcraft, will soon be back in China following a two-month suspension. Developer Blizzard Entertainment is, “currently working on changes requested by the General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP),” says Peoples’ Daily . “A GAPP official told [state news agency] Xinhua a review of the game was completed on July 19 and it now has preliminary approval.” Netease, Blizzard’s mainland operator, is allowed to start testing the game on July 30 while Blizzard continues working on the revisions, which will still need final approval from GAPP, says the story, adding: Once the ‘upgraded’ game gets approval from GAPP, Netease will chose a launch date and the game will be fully accessible once again, says the story.

After its initial adoption in May 2009, the original version of the controversial Hadopi anti-piracy legislation was nuked by the Constitutional Council, France’s highest legal authority. Taking a similar stance to that of the European Parliament, the Council declared the proposals unconstitutional and demanded that accused individuals have a fair trial. A modified version of the bill, which passes the ultimate disconnection decision to a judge, was accepted July 8th by the French Senate.
