DMCA Muscle Kills DVD Copying, for Real

Those awaiting a legitimate method to duplicate DVDs for personal use will likely have to wait even longer, perhaps forever, after RealNetworks tossed in the white towel and abandoned its litigation on the matter. RealNetworks spent almost two years in a legal battle with the Motion Picture Association of America, which sued the Seattle company to block the sale of its DVD-copying software and hardware –- generally known as RealDVD. The company said late Wednesday it’s dropping its appeal of an August federal court decision that declared RealDVD an illegal violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998.

UCLA Teams Up with Clicker to Combat Campus File Sharing

UCLA staff has recently announced the closing of a new partnership with Clicker, aimed at discouraging students from relying on torrent sites to get access to online TV, ReadWriteWeb reports. Following the example of other colleges in the U.S., the school’s faculty hopes that by offering students the alternative of using Clicker – a programming guide for online TV content, they will be able to significantly reduce illegal file-sharing. Apart from providing online TV services around the campus, the partnership with Clicker is expected to have a positive impact on students’ education as well, offering them convenient access to high-quality educational content.

Brief: Microsoft barred from selling Word, has plan for workaround

The US Court of Appeals has ordered Microsoft to drop support for editing Custom XML in Word, essentially stopping the company from selling current versions of one of its flagship products and affirming a $290 million patent infringement judgment against the software giant. The injunction, which goes into effect on January 11, 2010, not only bars the sale of Word 2007, but also affects all editions of Microsoft Office 2007, since Word comes bundled with all of them. It’s not as bad as it seems, however.
