Court Maintains Ban on DVD Backup Software

Judge sides with MPAA in case against Real Network’s RealDVD software that would allow consumers to make backup copies of purchased DVDs for personal use. Chalk up another win for the MPAA and another loss for consumers. For US District Court Judge Marilyn Hall Patel has issued a permanent injunction against Real Networks DVD-backup software RealDVD.

FTC Warns 100 Companies About P2P Data Leaks

RIAA and MPAA quick to “welcome” news of another story chronicling the “abuse of P2P technology,” and emphasizes the “serious threat” it poses to both consumers as well as copyright holders. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has sent letters to almost 100 unnamed companies warning them that personal information, including sensitive data about customers and/or employees, is available in on P2P networks. The govt agency has also opened “non-public investigations” of other companies whose customer or employee information has also been exposed on P2P networks.

Oscar Pirates, Fewer Films Leak Online This Year

Waxy’s Andy Baio has been collecting detailed piracy stats for every Oscar-nominated movie since 2003. Much to the delight of the MPAA, his most recent statistics show that, compared to previous years, fewer Oscar nominees have leaked online. The statistics for all 2010 nominees , except documentary and foreign films, show that 27 of the 34 films were available on BitTorrent in DVD quality last night.

How MPAA Failed to Cut Off the Alleged File Sharing Grandma

MPAA have not succeeded in their attempt to ban Cathi Paradiso, the grandmother falsely accused of illegal-file sharing, from accessing the Internet. Following the efforts of the News.com team, MPAA’s plans against Cathi Paradiso, who was hazardously accused multiple times of copyright infringement based on disputable evidence, were finally impeded. Under the pretext of the “three strikes” concept, the MPAA were determined to force the prosecution of Cathi Paradiso in order to set an example aimed at discouraging illegal file sharing.

In 2008, Newzbin received complaints from the MPA (the MPAA’s big brother) who raised questions over the legality of their operations. Later that year Newzbin confirmed that the MPA had chosen to file an injunction against the site.
