YouTube Use Accountable for 10% of Mobile Data
Mobile traffic reports during the second semester of 2009 indicate that YouTube is responsible for utilizing a tenth of existing data transfer resources, similar to P2P file sharing. A comprehensive study conducted by experts from Allot Communications, providers of network optimization for operators, reveals that mobile users favor streaming over HTTP. However, P2P traffic is closing in fast, accounting for the congestion of the most crowded five per cent of cells, with figures of up to 34 per cent, compared to about 12 per cent overall.

Last year, the FCC opened TV “white spaces” for use by unlicensed wireless devices, but this “WiFi on steroids” won’t be shooting up until the FCC also approves the databases that will be necessary to avoid interference. Today, Google announced that it plans to run one copy of the database itself, and it assured the FCC that it has the cash to do so for a minimum of five years. The geolocation database system will tell new white spaces devices what channels are available for use, and what power the devices can use for transmission.

Although it won’t ring any bells with the ‘younger’ torrenters, the name Mongo56 will certainly bring back some great memories for BitTorrent veterans who have been around for more than four years. In 2005 the site was one of the largest BitTorrent trackers around, operating without a searchable index of torrent files much like OpenBitTorrent and PublicBitTorrent are doing right now. As of today there are still a few older torrents floating around that use the tracker which has been unresponsive for years.

Demonoid is one of the biggest torrent sites around. Now fairly peacefully hosted to the west of Russia in Ukraine, the site has previously received unwanted attention from both music and movie companies. So when the site goes offline a lot of people start to think of the worst, especially if there is little or no warning.
