Continue reading »Facebook Denies ‘All Wrongdoing’ in ‘Beacon’ Data Breach
Facebook is denying it illegally breached the privacy of its users in a proposed $9.5 million settlement to a class action challenging its program that monitored and published what users of the social-networking site were buying or renting from Blockbuster, Overstock and other locations. To settle allegations that the social networking site’s “Beacon” program breached federal wiretap and video-rental privacy laws , Facebook is agreeing to seed what the agreement is calling a “Digital Trust Fund” that would issue more than $6 million in grants to organizations to study privacy. Facebook would have a seat on the fund’s three-member board — a move raising some eyebrows in the privacy community.

Warns that Digital Economy Bill, as written, will only “hasten the migration away from P2P” as people develop tools and applications to evade anti-piracy measures. Carphone Warehouse chief executive Charles Dunstone is calling for the Government to come to its senses over its threat to disconnect illegal file-sharers from the Internet . Dunstone was speaking at an event hosted by Carphone’s ISP TalkTalk as part of its TalkTalk’s “Don’t Disconnect Us” campaign.

The full headline is, ‘32% Inflation in UCLA Tuition Causes Near Riots (14 Arrested, 1 Tasered).’ It’s on GooTube and, “It’s just insane, here,” says the voiceover. “About 30 students stormed UCLA’s Campbell Hall and barricaded the doors with chains and bike locks early this morning to protest a student fee increase that is expected to be endorsed by the University of California’s Board of Regents today,” says the Los Angeles Times , going on »»» Updated at 8:39 a.m.: The UC Regents have started to meet, and hundreds of students have surrounded the building, protesting the proposed fee hike. Students who spent the night were sprawled outside Campbell Hall in sleeping bags. They carried posters and signs that read, “Don’t take our education away” and “Don’t privatize, democratize.” Many wore bandannas over their faces.
