Achtung! Criminal Investigation Against YouTube Underway in Germany
A criminal investigation has been launched against senior executives of YouTube and parent company Google in Hamburg, Germany, over allegations of copyright infringement, according to media reports from that country. The case started after a complaint by German music rights holders; Hamburg’s prosecutor has formally requested assistance from U.S. colleagues to compel YouTube to produce log files identifying who uploaded as well as who viewed 500 specific videos.

If the seas of BitTorrent have proven a little choppy for the crew of The Pirate Bay in the last few years, the last few weeks have seen some of the most turbulent waters so far. They have the fallout from the planned sale to Global Gaming Factory to contend with, a new lawsuit initiated by US movie studios, and yesterday they lost a Dutch court case in their absence. From that action they now face the prospect of huge fines in The Netherlands if they don’t disable that country’s access to their site within 10 days.

The two on the left are obviously a clear and present danger to Hollywood, aka Time Warner, Viacom, Fox, Sony, NBC Universal and Disney. They’re alleged to have camcorded Bruno, “the Sacha Baron Cohen docu-comedy in which an Austrian fashion journalist shoves his flamboyant gayness in the faces and other body parts of unsuspecting Americans”. Well, who wouldn’t have wanted a copy of that ?

Since the debut of broadcast television in this country more than 50 years ago, millions of Canadians have grown to expect free access to local television signals. While the mechanism for accessing those ad or taxpayer supported broadcasts has evolved from rooftop antennae to cable and satellite distribution, access has consistently been free (cable obviously charges for access but it does not pay for carriage of local signals). Last week, Canada’s broadcast regulator issued a decision that will bring the era of free local television to an end for many Canadians.

Two Martinsville brothers have been charged in connection with the camming of the newly released Bruno movie at a cinema in Manville, United States. The police claim the pair had been recording first run movies and selling the copies on the Internet. The prosecutor and police announced that Paul Epifan, 23, and his younger brother Timothy Epifan, 21, had both been charged with theft by deception.
