uTorrent for Windows saw its first public release in September 2005 and soon became the most widely used BitTorrent applications. The client is used by more than 50 million users worldwide and this number continues to rise. Today, uTorrent version 2.0 was officially released.

The negative impact record labels claim illegal file sharing has on music album sales has determined prominent Finnish rock label Lions Music to adopt a radical stance, recently announcing its refusal to sign new artists until government officials have found feasible solutions to the problem. According to Lions Music president Lars Eric Mattsson, illegal file sharing works both in the detriment of record labels and artists, giving the latter no chance to release their albums and build their careers in the music business. Mattsson hopes that the protest of an influential figure such as Lions Music will persuade politicians to get more involved in stopping P2P sites that are currently functioning in Finland.

Limewire announced two new hires today : John Pavley is joining the company as VP of egineering and Shoshana Winter as VP of marketing. Winter is one of the co-founders of the pioneering social networking site Six Degrees, which in itself is pretty interesting, but the hire of Pavley should be a real eye opener. Here’s a quick bio from the company’s press release: “Pavley comes to Lime Wire from Conductor, Inc., where as Chief Technology Officer, he led R&D, Development, Technical Operations, and IT for the company.

The makers of the multi-network open source P2P client Shareaza just released a new version with working chat functionality as well as a bunch of other bug fixes. Shareaza users can simultaneously use Edonkey, Gnutella, G2 and Bittorrent to download and share files with the world. Shareaza has a somewhat tumultuous history.
