Rich Get Richer in ‘Hot News’ Stock Tip Fight

A well-known financial news aggregator is being ordered by a federal judge to delay publication of prominent financial analysts’ buy and sell recommendations to allow the well-to-do the first crack at capitalizing on that trading research. The 3-year-old litigation, brought by Barclays Capital, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley and others, rests on the so-called “hot news” doctrine the Supreme Court first recognized in a 1918 case concerning the unauthorized and immediate republication of wire service reports. A New York federal judge said Theflyonthewall breached the doctrine, which allows suits for re-reporting time sensitive “hot news.” Research that Theflyonthewall reposted or alluded to on its site was designated for the banks’ clients that earn the firms not less than $50,000 to $100,000 in trading commissions yearly, U.S.

BitStalker Can Monitor Pirate Bay Torrents for $13 p/mo

Researchers create BitStalker, an efficient “active probing strategy” for finding copyrighted material on large BitTorrent tracker sites, but fact that the research was funded “in part” by PolyCipher, an ISP consortium, should make some nervous about what it plans to do with it. Researchers from the University of Colorado have published a new technique for fighting the distribution of copyrighted material on BitTorrent . Intel victim of cyberattacks at the same time as Google

Intel was also a victim of a cyberattack at the same time as the high-profile attack on Google, adding it to the list of companies allegedly targeted by Chinese hackers. The company revealed the information Tuesday in its annual filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, noting that the attack could harm Intel’s business operations if any intellectual property was stolen. Intel didn’t reveal much more in its filing except to say that a “sophisticated incident” occurred in January, “around the same time as the recently publicized security incident reported by Google.” The company said it’s investigating the incident, but warned investors that it may not be fully aware yet of the magnitude of what happened.

OiNK Admin Received Nearly $300k in Donations

Yesterday, the OiNK trial continued with the selection of a jury consisting of 10 men and two women. Beforehand they were all asked whether they were familiar with the OiNK BitTorrent tracker, if they held any special interest in protecting copyright holders or had any connections with anti-piracy groups. The jurors were further warned by Judge Briggs not to Google for OiNK or do any other form of research on the Internet.
