Malicious ATM Catches Hackers

LAS VEGAS — There’s no honor among thieves, nor apparently among hackers. A fake ATM kiosk was positioned in the conference center of the Riviera Hotel Casino capturing data from an unknown number of hackers attending the DefCon hacker conference before someone noticed something suspicious about the kiosk. “In any casino anything that is considered that high value has a camera,” said Brian Markus, CEO of Aries Security, “and they placed it where there were no [hotel] cameras visibly watching that exact spot where the ATM was.” Markus said it was clear to him the ATM was fake when he looked at the smoked glass on the front of the machine and noticed something funny about it.

Exclusive Peek Inside Defcon’s High-Tech Badge

LAS VEGAS — Thousands of hackers, script-kiddies, feds and security professionals will be gathering at the Riviera Hotel and Casino this weekend for DefCon, the world’s largest hacker convention and they’ll all have one thing in common: Joe “Kingpin” Grand’s custom-engineered badge. Normal conventions have a paper or plastic based badge, but Defcon has been putting out badges for the last four years with electronic functionality. This year, Defcon’s 17th, Grand and Jeff “Dark Tangent” Moss, the creator and mastermind behind Defcon, have taken the badge to the next level.
