Copyright Industry Stacks Town Hall Meeting In Their Favour

It was the second of only two town hall meetings, but it appeared that a vast majority of those in the audience were there to shut out non-copyright industry opinions. Some reports are suggesting that the government may have played a role in rigging the whole meeting, but more moderate reports suggest that the industry merely stacked the deck in their favour. For those outside of Canada, the thought that a consultation could be rigged by the copyright industry may not be a surprise.

MediaDefender Virus Scam Targets Torrent Site Users

The latest in a long line of scams targeting email users is attempting to capitalize on the increasing number using BitTorrent sites. Targets of the scam receive an unsolicited email purporting to come from notorious anti-piracy company MediaDefender . The email, which is simply addressed “Dear User!” claims the individual has been monitored on any of several torrent sites while engaging in anything from copyright infringement, through to simply browsing the sites.

When your hobby is baiting 419 scammers (also known as Nigerian scammers or advance-fee fraudsters), a death threat isn’t cause for concern—it’s a trophy worth bragging about to your friends. Scam baiters are the vigilante enforcers who come together to waste hours, weeks, or months of 419 scammers’ lives for nothing more than the satisfaction of knowing that they are distracting them from real victims. Though the world of 419 scams has existed since long before the Internet, people continue to fall for scammers in droves—certainly, scammers are making millions of dollars every year by promising money, goods, and romance that they never deliver on.
