What child has not sat starry-eyed around the fire, dreaming of the goodies to come on January 1—Public Domain Day? The thought of new books and movies and music coming out from copyright is enough to send sugarplums dancing through heads, unless you live in the US in 2010. In which case, you have nothing to celebrate, since nothing is entering the public domain this year.

Alleged Pirate Walks Free Under New Anti-Piracy Law

The first court case testing the new IPRED anti-piracy legislation has proven the law is not the silver bullet the anti-piracy lobby hoped it would be. The law is intended to make it easier for copyright holders to obtain the personal details of alleged file-sharers from ISPs, but the ISPs are not handing information over without a fight. This April, five book publishers handed a request to a local court for information on the owner of an FTP-server that allegedly stored more than 2000 audio books.

Mother of Purdue Bomb Hoax Suspect Sues for Son’s Release

The mother of the 16-year-old North Carolina boy arrested for allegedly making a bomb threat against Purdue University has filed a federal habeas corpus petition demanding his release, and attacking the government’s authority to prosecute anyone. In the 14-page brief filed Friday in federal court in Indiana, where the teen is being held without bail in a juvenile facility, Annette Lundeby reasserts her claim that her son was with her in church at the time of the February 15 telephone call that summoned a bomb squad and evacuated the Mechanical Engineering building at Purdue. But Lundeby, acting as her own attorney, also levels a series of more exotic arguments.
