A Maryland woman lost her accounting job after a background check performed through the FBI’s criminal database indicated, erroneously, that she was unsuitable for the job, according to the Baltimore Sun . Eschol Amelia “Amy” Studnitz had been working for Corporate Mailing Services since August 2008 as a senior accountant. Last July, after CMS won a contract to handle mail for the Social Security Administration, the administration performed a routine background check on Studnitz and other CMS employees, who needed a low-level security clearance to work on the contract.

PayChoice, a payroll processing firm that also produces an online payroll management system used by 240 other payroll processing firms, suffered a breach last week that resulted in hackers absconding with the account information of firms using its online payroll product, according to the Washington Post . In a Sept. 28 e-mail sent to customers, PayChoice indicated that the hackers had obtained e-mail addresses as well as login IDs and at least parts of passwords for account holders using the OnlineEmployer.com web site.

California officials have received more than 800 reports of health data breaches in five months after a new state law went into effect January 1. The law requires healthcare organizations in California to report suspected incidents of intentional and unintentional unauthorized breaches of a patient’s personally identifiable health information to the California Department of Public Health. The agency, however, says it was surprised by the large number of reports it received in such a short period, according to the Journal of the American Health Information Management Association , and expect that number to increase dramatically.
