Imagine the outrage that would occur if everyone’s iPhones and BlackBerrys wouldn’t let them play music until each song was authenticated on a DRM server as a legit purchase? Such a scenario could play out in Japan if the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) has its way—the organization is pushing for an agreement with music sites that could result in every phone checking with the cloud before playing the user’s selections in an attempt to curb music piracy within the country. Executives from the RIAJ have begun talks with unnamed music download sites and mobile phone operators this week, according to anonymous participants speaking to the Financial Times .

The admins of the German Rapidshare link forum Leecher.to were probably a little uneasy at first when they recently received a letter from a record company in regards to a pre-release leak. The label in question told them that it had found a link to a house remix of a previously unreleased song by the German rapper Hassan Annouri. However, Annouri’s label didn’t insist on taking down the song, and it didn’t threaten them with any expensive lawsuits either.

In April hundreds of people were killed after an earthquake hit L’Aquila in Italy, prompting several initiatives to raise funds for those affected. One project saw 56 artists and musicians come together to record a song called “Domani 21/4.09″ (Tomorrow 21/4.09). Inevitably the song leaked onto P2P networks before its official release.
