How Will You Get Your Internet Video in the Future?
Right now, the landscape for Internet video is relatively stable, with the vast bulk of online video sites (including the market leaders YouTube and Hulu ) providing their streams via the Flash plug-in and usually containing H.264 encoded video. Video shared on P2P networks is a different story of course, primarily MPEG-4 ASP in .avi or else H.264 in .mkv (although I am always surprised by the large amount of MPEG-2 content still traded today). Even though the current situation is seemingly well established, a couple of recent developments have illuminated changes that are likely to have major impacts on the future of Internet video.

Designed to bring people together in a warm, user-friendly environment, social networking service Cliqset enables you to safely access, share and discuss content online. Only three months since entering public beta, the website has already been given a fresher look, receiving UI improvements and a series of new features such as tools for organizing real-time streams and groups, as well as the possibility to share files with friends. Furthermore, Cliqset now provides a Firefox extension and a new edition of the Adobe Air desktop application.

This week Google extended its services with a musical one that offers free streams and downloadable MP3s but probably to see in it a challenger to Apple's online music market would be too soon. The idea of the service which uses Google’s Onebox search feature (which presents the user with contextual information for his searches), is to enter a music-related term such as a track title, artist, album name, or even some song lyrics and it will display results with a song clip if one is available. For now, at least, Google's Music Onebox will only be available to U.S users.
