If you’re ready to sign three years away to get an iPhone in Canada, now’s your big chance! “The end of Rogers’ iPhone monopoly is drawing near, as its two main Canadian rivals prepare to launch their next-generation wireless network this week,” says the Toronto Star , going on: “BCE Inc. president and CEO George Cope said Bell Canada will launch its new high-speed wireless network Wednesday, one day before Telus Corp. does, though both companies worked to build the network and are sharing the new infrastructure.

Harry Belafonte and Noam Chomsky are among famous activists who’ve signed a declaration opposing the Toronto film festival’s decision to showcase Tel Aviv in its inaugural City to City program. “On the other hand,” continues the Toronto Star , “filmmakers Ivan Reitman, Robert Lantos and David Cronenberg and actress Minnie Driver have signed on to the camp supporting the festival and the Tel Aviv program, accusing their opponents of, among other things, ‘political censorship’.” Not that famous faces are anything new in political protests. Jane Fonda is, for example, still living down her active and very public support of the ‘Democratic Republic of Vietnam’ during the Vietnam war.

Earlier this year, DV8, one of the most prolific music piracy groups responsible for more than 3,000 single and album releases in recent years, suffered major setbacks . Following a BPI investigation, police (without fanfare or media reports) swooped on members of the group, the earliest back in May. Another seemingly significant arrest took place in June.

Canada’s national telephone marketing do-not-call list has been a sick joke from Day One. Said p2pnet recently, “Run by Bell Canada, itself under attack for abusing its own customers , it’s administered by the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission), which’ll peddle it to marketeers for a nominal fee.” According to CRTC, the list is an unqualified national success . But the truth is: it’s a serious national embarrassment.
