Digital music prices: are they illegally fixed?

A federal lawsuit alleging collusion among the major music labels over digital download pricing can proceed, a three judge Appeals Court panel ruled today. As lawsuits go, this one’s a humdinger, charging that the labels engaged in a price-fixing conspiracy to ensure that they each made about 70 cents per track sold online, and that no one received a better deal than anyone else. The case had earlier been tossed for a “failure to state a claim,” but the Second Circuit Court of Appeals has reinstated it and ordered the trial judge to proceed with the case.

BBC Trials BitTorrent Powered HD Video Streaming

The BBC is one of the media partners participating in the EU-funded P2P-Next research project, which uses BitTorrent technology to shape the future of web-based video delivery. BitTorrent is very effective in reducing bandwidth costs and thanks to technology developed by the P2P-Next team, it can also be used to stream TV-shows. Today P2P-Next has launched a new trial where they stream an episode of R&DTV in high definition.

Court of Appeal Says ‘No’ Thrice To The Pirate Bay

The Court of Appeal has denied a trio of requests made by the Pirate Bay defendants who were sentenced to one year in prison and a fine of $905,000 last April. The defendants – Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm, Peter Sunde and Carl Lundström – had hoped that they could get a ruling from the European Court of Justice (EC) before their appeal is heard in November. Time and again during the original trial The Pirate Bay was compared in functionality to Google, so the defendants lawyers wanted to know if the EC would classify The Pirate Bay as a legitimate search engine.
