Warner Bros. is one of the companies that have spent a huge deal of time and money in trying to get the people behind The Pirate Bay put in jail. The same company is also going after Aussie ISP iiNet, initially claiming that the Internet provider engaged in primary acts of copyright infringement because its customers distributed copyright works using its network.

When it comes to Internet issues in Australia, Senator Stephen Conroy is becoming increasingly unpopular. Best known for his plans to filter the Internet, Conroy has managed to annoy an increasing number of prominent industry figures – the very people he absolutely needs onside if any of his plans are to come to fruition. Last year the chief of ISP iiNet Michael Malone labeled Conroy as “the worst Communications Minister we’ve had in the 15 years since the [Internet] industry has existed,” and this year the ISP pulled out of filtering trials, saying the filter would not work.

Censorship doesn’t stand a chance any more. Thanks to the Net. The Australian government is among administrations more interested in kowtowing to entertainment industry demands than looking after the people who put them in power, and who keep them there.
