Back in November, UK ISP Virgin Media announced that it would start using deep packet inspection gear to start riffling through user traffic. The goal was to search some of the leading P2P networks in order to measure copyrighted material passing through them. Today, the European Commission indicated that the plan is problematic, and it will keep a close eye on the trial.

In November 2009 we reported that new technology could be adopted to monitor illegal file sharing in UK. Now one of UK’s leading broadband providers, Virgin Media, has announced that it could soon reveal new technology that aims at combating file sharing. This deep packet inspection technology (DPI) the company is flirting with is provided provided by Detica and as reported by Times, while it can be used in identifying the types of files Internet users are downloading it can’t be used by companies to pry into their customers’ online activity and grab IP addresses.
