Confessed hacker Albert Gonzalez’s turn as a Secret Service informant led him down a dark path of obsession, culminating in the largest identity-theft spree in history. Frances Gonzalez Lago, Gonzalez’s sister wrote his sentencing judge that her brother’s work as an informant for the agency between 2003 and and 2008 seemed to act as a reward for his obsession with computers. “All this seemed okay at the time, but psychologically it was feeding an obsession that in the end would become my brother’s downfall,” she told the court.

The latest in a long line of scams targeting email users is attempting to capitalize on the increasing number using BitTorrent sites. Targets of the scam receive an unsolicited email purporting to come from notorious anti-piracy company MediaDefender . The email, which is simply addressed “Dear User!” claims the individual has been monitored on any of several torrent sites while engaging in anything from copyright infringement, through to simply browsing the sites.

The outbreak of swine flu has now been officially designated a pandemic by the World health Organization. But although health authorities are only now acknowledging the fact, H1N1 influenza A, “evolved and hopped to humans several months before public health officials recognized the outbreak, according to a new analysis,” says LiveScience , quoting Nature magazine online. “Scientists also said the virus’s early incarnation was festering in pigs for years but went undetected,” it says, going on there’s, “evidence that new genetic elements in swine can result in the emergence of viruses with pandemic potential in humans”.

At about 2 am on Saturday, four new Twitter accounts began spreading a self-replicating worm. It was created by “bored 17-year-old Brooklyn resident” Mikeyy, aka Michael Mooney, says PC Magazine .
