Tough talk for Samsung’s lawyers, but no sanctions

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA— Apple’s recent demand for sanctions against Samsung’s lawyers doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere, although the judge overseeing the giant Apple v. Samsung patent and trademark case did have some harsh words Friday morning for Samsung’s lawyers. On Tuesday, after some Samsung evidence was excluded from opening statements , Samsung lawyer John Quinn went ahead and sent out the excluded slides to some members of the media, along with a note saying that the jury deserved to hear all the evidence. That angered US District Judge Lucy Koh, who asked Quinn to explain himself. Meanwhile, Apple asked for sanctions against Samsung’s lawyers, calling the situation an “egregious” attempt to influence the jury. Koh didn’t take up Apple’s suggestion that their opponents be sanctioned, or that the jury be given additional instructions to discount Samsung evidence.
