UN agency says it changed rules about sending tech to Iran, North Korea

More than two weeks after revelations  that the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) had circumvented rules against shipping technology to Iran and North Korea, the UN agency has now come forward with a response as to how it could brazenly violate the UN’s own sanctions against those rogue states. Well, sort of. In a statement released Thursday, WIPO Director General Francis Gurry says that as of May 1, 2012, “new internal procedures were established and made operational.” These new rules stipulate that “all managers must refer any activity proposed in a country subject to UN sanctions to WIPO’s Legal Counsel for guidance and clearance,” and that the previous moves are “being referred to the relevant UN Sanctions Committees for their information and guidance.” Read 2 remaining paragraphs | Comments
